Do you actually need an app? A quick gut-check

A mobile app is a big commitment. Here is an honest way to decide whether you need one — or whether a great website will do.

We build mobile apps — and we’ll still be the first to tell you when you don’t need one. An app is a real commitment: two app stores, reviews, updates, and users who have to choose to install it. Sometimes that’s exactly right. Often a great website is the smarter move.

You probably want an app if…

  • People use it repeatedly. Daily or weekly use earns a spot on someone’s home screen.
  • You need device features. Push notifications, offline access, camera, location, background activity.
  • The experience has to feel instant. Heavy, interactive tools benefit from living on the device.

A website is probably enough if…

  • It’s mostly informational or a first touch. Marketing, services, a portfolio, a menu.
  • You need to be found on Google. Websites are discoverable; apps are not.
  • Usage is occasional. People won’t install an app they open twice a year.

The both-worlds option

Modern web apps (installable “PWAs”) cover a surprising amount of middle ground — an app-like experience with no app store. It’s often the right first step: launch on the web, learn what people actually do, then invest in a native app once you know it’ll pay off.

The point isn’t to talk you out of an app — it’s to make sure you’re spending where it counts.
